about The artist
When I was a child, my sister and I would spend hours and hours sitting at our “art table,” drawing picture after picture that would later be hung up on the fridge. My dad used to print out photos and give us art lessons, teaching my sister and I about how the eyes are in the middle of the head and how the sky is all around us and not just on the top inch of the paper. My mom was endlessly supportive with her affirming words that each new piece was the, “best one yet.” My goal has always been to make my parents proud, whether it was sports, work, or school, I was constantly looking for that validation, pushing me to be better in every aspect of my life. I think art, painting especially gave me a sort of freedom to release that constant need to push to be the best and just allowed me to sit in the creative process. I think that is why I was drawn to art from such a young age, there was no right answer. Every piece was the next best thing regardless if it was a portrait or my name in bubble letters adjacent to a poorly drawn palm tree. I am an artist for the freedom, for the relaxation, and for the hundreds and thousands of results you can produce.
In high school, I discovered my art style in portraiture, specifically painting. I learned that analyzing the human figure is something that I constantly am doing anyways, outlining, making strokes in my head, determining the colors I would mix for the skin tone. My creative brain cannot be turned off so may as well use it. I loved color and learned so much from my high school art teacher. I work in the field of representational portraiture and the artists that are important to me are Alice Neel and David Hockey. I make paintings in acrylic because it is what I have on hand and it is the quickest to dry.
These artworks have been “free therapy,” as I like to call it, for many years and just recently I have realized what an impact I can make in the art world. There are plentiful fields to go into within the art world and even painting alone. Since the world has gone graphic and technology has taken over, there is something to be said about a custom, hand painted scene. However, to have the ability to choose your own colors, mix the paint with your own knife, decide the texture, and paint your own painting is a freedom that can never be taken away from artists. I have been making custom paintings but to be able to paint pieces that I enjoy painting for myself is something that I would love to do in the future. I want to show young artists that they can paint what they want and share with the world what they want to share because art is so important to life. Art lets us feel joy, freedom, and relaxation without needing to give one right answer.
